George Tucker, Callicott, and Families

1. GEORGE1 TUCKER was born Abt. 1810 in Tennessee, and died August 18, 1841 in Wesley, Madison County, Arkansas. He married FERRIBY VIOLET LOUISA CALICOTT Abt. 1827 in Warren County, Tennessee, daughter of JAMES CALLICOTT and ELIZABETH VAUGHAN. She was born Abt. 1811 in Hawkins or Warren County, Tennessee, and died August 14, 1841 in Madison County, Arkansas.
Notes on GEORGE TUCKER:
George Tucker operated a distillery in Madison County from 1838 until his death in 1842. It is possible that he ran the still from as early as 1835, but the records are inclusive on this point. Since he claimed title to property earlier than most settlers, he may have been making whiskey from that date (1833). In 1840, he claimed that his still was worth $200, without question the source of much of his wealth. He claimed on his 1841 tax assessment to own three horses, four head of cattle, and a slave valued at $400. He obviously owned more than this, but the fact that he owned three horses indicates that he was wealthier than most of his neighbors.

George Tucker apparently died with the knowledge that death was approaching. Accordingly, he dictated how he wished his estate to be settled and how he wanted his children to be cared for. Daniel Vaughan, Violet's uncle who served as Executor, was apparently to insure that the Tucker children were to share equally, It seems that George Tucker's brother-in-law, John C. Calico, acquired the distillery on the condition that he raise and provide a home for the Tucker children, the Implication being that Violet was unable to provide for the welfare of her family.
FERRIBY VIOLET LOUISA CALICOTT:
Died in Childbirth, and the babies were raised by John and Betsy Calico.

County, Tennessee; died August 14, 1841 in Madison County, Arkansas. She was the daughter of James Q. Callicott and Elizabeth Vaughan.
Notes for George Tucker:

Notes for Ferriby Violet Louisa Calicott:
Died in Childbirth, and the babies were raised by John and Betsy Calico.

Wilson Vaughan

Wilson Vaughan b abt 1800 and Nancy Bowlin Vaughan b 1805 were the parents of
Stokely, Wylie, Wesley, Mary and Clinton Vaughan.
Based on this research, as shown below, its believed that Wilson VAUGHAN died
by April or before, in 1837.
Levi Bowlin and Mary Asher Bowlin were the parents of Nancy Bowlin. Nancy is
shown in Hawkins Co TN 1840 census, living close to Levi and brother James, with her children.
*1829 Wilson Vaughan Dec 1829 bought land from Samuel Nicholson.
Deed registered May 23, 1835.
Dec 26, 1829 Land Title from Samuel Nicholson, county of Knox in TN to Wilson Vaughan, county of Hawkins TN, assigns a parcel of land on Duck Creek, including the improvement which the said Vaughan now lives.

1830 Wilson Vaughan found in 1830 Hawkins Co TN census with wife
Nancy Bowlin Vaughan, living adjacent to Levi Bowlin.

1833 Sarah Nicholson to Levi Bowlen Reg'd March 4 1833. Samuel
may have been deceased in 1833. This property was adjacent to Wilson and Nancy's property.

State of Tennessee
Hawkins County
Be it remembered that at a County Court begun and held at the courthouse in Rogersville in the county and state aforesaid on the 1st Monday of May, 1837, and of the Independence of the United States, the 60th, before: Nicholas Fain, James L. Etter, John A. Rogers, John Stokeley, Robert Brice, John Tunnell, Edward Lee, Robert Rogers, John Mitchell, Robert D. Young, John Shough, John Ball, Nicholas Beckner, Absolom Kyle; Justices of the Peace Commissioned and assigned to hold the County Court in said county and state.

An inventory of the personal property of Wilson Vaughan, dec'd, sold by Nancy Vaughan, Administratrix, was returned to court by the said Administratrix which was received and ordered to be recorded.

1840 Nancy Vaughan is found in 1840 census (Hawkins Co) living by
Levi, with her children, with James on the other side of Levi. Wilson
is apparently deceased by then.

1842 James Bowlin sells property and cites "the line of the heirs of Wilson Vaughan" to the line of Thomas Rains.

Squire's Ledger for School Enrollment shows Nancy has enrolled her children in
school thru 1844. There are pages missing, but it appears that Nancy left Hawkins Co
at that time for KY. Levi probably has died by then. Mary, Nancy's mother, left for KY with
James Bowlin so that may have been the reason Nancy left, but we are unable to find her
listed in an 1850 census.

1849 Stokley left Fayette Co KY after having worked as a carpenter on Henry Clay's home.

1850 Stokely married Amanda Sullivan, daughter of William Sullivan and Anna Rogers on July 26, 1850. The Sullivan's originated from Hawkins Co TN although Amanda was born in Indiana..

1860 Nancy is found in 1860 census living in Carter Co KY with her sons Wesley and Clinton VAUGHAN. (Wesley, her son, goes to Civil War)

1870 Nancy Bowlin Vaughan/n in 1870, age 65, found living in Jackson Co IN with son Wesley Vaughn and his family.

1880 Nancy Bowlin Vaughan/n is living with her son, Wesley and his family in Lawrence Co IN. She is 75 years of age. She indicates on the census report that she was born in TN and her parents were born in KY.

It is probable that Nancy died and is buried in Lawrence Co IN after 1880 and before 1882,
however, we have yet to find any records of her death and where she probably is buried. Death records in Indiana were not kept before 1882.

Sampson Harp - Deborah Grace

The Sam Harp mentioned was possibly Sampson Harp who came from
Overton Co, TN about 1836-1837 to Carroll County, and listed on the
1836 Overton Co, TN Tax List and then on the 1837 Carroll Co, AR Tax
List. Also is found some of the other people Turnbow mentioned on this
1837 Tax List. Samspon was on the 1840 Carroll Co, AR census and a
few of the others were as well. But I found most of these people
(except Sampson) later listed on the 1850 & 1860 Marion Co, AR census
records.

Both Carroll & Marion Co. were created out of Izard Co, AR - Carroll in 1833 and Marion in 1836. The area that is now Boone Co, AR was part of Carroll Co, AR until 1869, so Carroll Co. would have butted up to the western border of Marion Co, AR during the 1836 to 1869 time
frame.

This Sampson Harp married Deborah Grace ca 1810 probably in TN. By 1850 they had moved to Johnson Co, AR and from there to the Stockton area of San Joaquin Co, CA by 1860. They both died there before the 1870 census, and have no dates of death, but, according to
info. passed on, Sampson maybe buried near Turner, CA and Deborah in buried at French Camp Cem, San Joaquin Co, CA.

Their children were:
1. Sarah Stanton Harp b. 4 Jun 1812 TN m. Isham Johnson Davis
2. James Anderson Harp b. 18 Aug 1814 TN m. Sarah unknown
3. William B. Harp b. 24 Dec 1818 TN m. Malinda Grace
4. Mary C. Harp b. 31 Jan 1822 TN - no other info
5. Thomas David Harp b. 29 Aug 1824 Overton Co, TN m. 1st Margaret

6. Martha H. Harp b. 7 Dec 1826 TN m. Ichabod Harp Davis
7. Delia C. Harp b. 20 Feb 1829 TN
8. Nancy Harp b. 3 May 1831 TN, d. 5 Dec 1890, bur. Pioneer Cem, Modesto, CA
9. Mourning Harp b. 25 Apr 1833 TN (Could be Hester M. age 17 b. TN,
wife of Edward Grangreen, living next door to Sampson & Deborah Harp
in 1850?)
10. Salina A. Harp b. 30 May 1836 TN m. unknown Poteet

Notes for NANCY BOWLEN/BOWLING:

1860 Nancy is found in 1860 census living in Carter Co KY with
her sons Wesley and Clinton VAUGHAN.
(Wesley, her son, goes to Civil War)

1870 Nancy Bowlin Vaughan/n in 1870, age 65, found living in
Jackson Co IN with son Wesley Vaughn and his family

1880 Nancy Bowlin Vaughan/n is living with her son, Wesley and his
family in Lawrence Co IN. She is 75 years of age. She indicates on
the census report that she was born in TN and her parents were born
in KY.

It is probable that Nancy died and is buried in Lawrence Co IN after 1880 and before 1882,
however, we have yet to find any records of her death and where she probably is buried. Death records in Indiana were not kept before 1882.

Rogers, John Mitchell, Robert W. Kinkead, Robert D. Young, John Stokeley, John Tunnell, John Reynolds, Absolom Kyle and Robert Brice; Justices of the Peace Commissioned and assigned to hold the County Court in said county and state.

On motion, leave is given Nancy Vaughan to administer on the estate of Wilson Vaughan, dec'd, and thereupon the said Nancy Vaughan came into court and having entered into bond with approved security was qualified in due form of law.

An inventory of the personal property of Wilson Vaughan, dec'd, was returned to court by Nancy Vaughan, the Administrix, which was ordered to be received and recorded.
